Guadalajara (August 1986)

Here we in Guadalajara, Mexico (capitol of the Jalisco province). Ever wanted to be seranaded as you ate? We were, by a group of magnificent mariachis. At the table is Judy, mother of Mark and Matt, at the left and right of me in the middle of that group of kids.

In downtown Guadalajara, which even then had close to three million inhabitants, here is the Plaza de la Liberacion. This was a cathedral at one end of that plaza.

Still in Guadalajara. Some of the people would come up to your windshield and wash it for a few pesos, or sell candy or gum. This guy had a gallon of gasoline, put it in his mouth, and spit it out. His partner had a gallon of water, in case he lit himself on fire. We were the first car in the line of traffic, and he literally sprayed the fire right at our windshield.

This picture was taken on the southern edge of Guadalajara. Many of the streets were this narrow, and most of the buildings were that close to the street.
