Rebellion's End: Chapter 1
This
is the story of two smugglers from from Nar Shadda, a human pilot, Fabius
Kane, and Donovan,
a Sluissi tech. Together they fly a Ghtroc Freighter known as The
Banshees Kiss. One day, when Donovan is on leave, Kane takes
a job on Tatooine. Working out of Mos Eisley, his mission is to smuggle
the Max Rebo Band
out of Jabba's
Palace. Ever since the crimelords death, the entire palace has
been under siege by various factions vying for power, leaving the innocuous
band trapped underneath a sea of violence. When Kane first gets there after the two and half day flight, he meets a group of Gamorreans outside. Fabius tricks them into launching an attack on the palace to create a distraction, which will allow him to sneak in. As the Gamorreans force their way inside, they begin to get cut down by the forces waiting for them. Yet a pang of remorse snaps inside of Kane, who had just been using the porcine warriors. Rather than just sneaking past them as he had originally intended, Kane jumps back into his landspeeder and rams it into the guards attacking the Gamorreans, all the time, firing his blaster wildly. The Gamorreans had been falling fast, but manage to rally behind Kane's charge and a few manage to survive and actually make it inside.
Fabius diverges from the Gamorreans, leaving them to their own designs,
and continues to make his way through the palace, but is captured by
Tesseks guards.
The Quarren leaves him for death at the hands of his interrogation droids,
led by EV-9D9,
but the Gamorean leader, Gartogg,
the only other survivor by then, rescues Kane. On his way out, the smuggler
gladly blasts the interrogation droid and his mechanical cronies to
bits. Fabius and Gartogg then raid the armory, taking several thermal
detonators and light repeating blasters. The two then go to find Max
Rebo and his band. Kane
and the Gartogg find the band on the garden level of Jabbas Palace.
The other troops do not dare bomb them there, for fear of destroying
the scarce food reserves. Once Kane reaches them, he tells the band
what he is there to do, but they do not seem optimistic that Kane can
get them out alive. Proving them all wrong, Kane and Gartogg hastily
blast their way out, dropping thermal detonators along the way: including
one which destroys all the food in the garden. As they exit through
the hangar, they steal one skiff and destroy the others with the remaining
thermals; as one of the band hits the last skiff, the whole place seems
to go up in flames. (Although, the damage turns out not to be as total
as it seemed. Later, Kane will find out that what he did ultimately
led to Tesseks rivals being eliminated—but not the Quarren
himself, or his forces.) They all make it back to Mos Eisley, but there, just before departure, Imperial Stormtroopers grab Kane. Pointed out by an Imperial Intelligence Officer, Kane is taken to the headquarters of the Imperial garrison on Tatooine and handed over to the top Military Officer, Colonel Brecht. There, the Imperial Intelligence officer argues with Brecht. In part, this is because despite the spys testimony, Brecht is forced to believe that Kane is innocent—after all, Stormtroopers found his ship empty of any cargo. In frustration, the spy starts to beat Brecht. The two stormtroopers present turn their backs to the officer and leave. Kane feels more endangered by the spy, so while he is not looking, Kane tosses the officer his hold-out blaster. The officer promptly shoots the spy. When the stormtroopers come back in, Brecht blasts them both. Foolishly, Fabius then asks for his weapon back. After giving him an odd look, the Colonel gives Kane his blaster back and tells him to leave immediately. Even after saving Brecht, Imperials try to stop Fabius from leaving, but he flies past all opposition: now with the band in his cargo hold. Only later does Fabius realize his mistake. All of the Imperials were shot with his gun and the surviving officer was beaten (purportedly by him, as detailed in later Imperial reports). Kane is formally accused of killing the Intelligence officer and the stormtroopers and finds himself the target of an Imperial bounty.
